چکیده

We examine the status of the nuclear matter compressibility K„obtained from experimental data of the strength distribution of the giant monopole resonance in nuclei and employing a least-squares fit to a semiempirical expansion of the nucleus compressibility E~ in A ' '. We present arguments indicating that all the coefficients of this expansion must be determined by a fit to the data. In our analysis we have used the entire data set, correcting for systematic energy differences between data sets measured in different laboratories, and applying the same criteria to all sets in extracting the uncertainties. Contrary to recent statements by Sharma and collaborators, we find that the present complete data set is not adequate to limit the range of IC„ to better than about a factor of 1.7 (200 to 350 MeV).

A microscopic estimate of the nuclear matter compressibility and symmetry energy in relativistic mean-field models

The relativistic mean-field plus RPA calculations, based on effective Lagrangians with densitydependent meson-nucleon vertex functions, are employed in a microscopic analysis of the nuclear matter compressibility and symmetry energy. We compute the isoscalar monopole and the isovector dipole response of Pb, as well as the differences between the neutron and proton radii for Pb and several Sn is...

Monopole giant resonances and nuclear compressibility in relativistic mean field theory

Isoscalar and isovector monopole oscillations that correspond to giant resonances in spherical nuclei are described in the framework of time-dependent relativistic mean-field (RMF) theory. Excitation energies and the structure of eigenmodes are determined from a Fourier analysis of dynamical monopole moments and densities. The generator coordinate method, with generating functions that are solu...

The breathing-mode giant monopole resonance and the surface compressibility in the relativistic mean-field theory

The breathing-mode isoscalar giant monopole resonance (GMR) is investigated using the generator coordinate method within the relativistic mean-field (RMF) theory. Employing the Lagrangian models of the nonlinear-σ model (NLσ), the scalarvector interaction model (SVI) and the σ-ω coupling model (SIGO), we show that each Lagrangian model exhibits a distinctly different GMR response. Consequently,...

Theoretical understanding of the nuclear incompressibility : where do we stand ?

The status of the theoretical research on the compressional modes of finite nuclei and the incompressibility K∞ of nuclear matter, is reviewed. It is argued that the recent experimental data on the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) allow extracting the value of K∞ with an uncertainity of about ± 12 MeV. Non-relativistic (Skyrme, Gogny) and relativistic mean field models predict for K∞ ...
